American Family receives three wellness awards

Efforts to stem smoking, encourage exercise and provide health screenings have paid off for American Family with recognition from three leading wellness organizations.

“Building our wellness programs has been a slow and steady process, but it’s one that we’re committed to,” says Benefits Director Tom Armani. “We are so pleased to be recognized by these organizations. We hope to see our efforts expand and become a healthy benefit to employees in all our operating areas.”

Two national awards, one regional recognition

In 2009, American Family received a Silver Level Award from the Wellness Council of America and we improved on that in 2012, earning a Gold Level Award. In its award presentation, the Wellness Council recognized American Family’s commitment and comprehensive approach to employee health. The judging included an evaluation of each company’s progress in the areas of physical activity, tobacco use, nutrition, stress management and medical self-care.

Other winners of the Gold Level Award included Mayo Regional Hospital in Maine, California State University at Fresno, and J.J. Keller and Associates in Wisconsin.

“We’ve worked to up our game when it comes to wellness,” says Marsha, benefits specialist. “Our new health risk-assessment programs, healthful eating items from our food services, and fitness classes and presentations helped move us from silver to gold status.”

The League of American Bicyclists, through its Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) Program, rewarded our efforts to improve bicycle safety and access to our corporate facilities in the Madison, Wis., area, including bike lanes, signs, covered bike parking, a “guaranteed ride home” program and an intranet site that provides bike maps. We received a Bronze Level Award, a first for our company.

“American Family supports bicycle commuting and encourages employees to make lifestyle changes resulting in improved health,” says Rita, facilities site manager in the Business Integration Division. “Our employees see health benefits from biking, and we have a positive impact on the environment by reducing our carbon footprint.”

And in Wisconsin, American Family earned a Gold Level Award from the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health. The award recognizes our dedicated wellness staff, education outreach, health screenings and prevention programs.
